The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is a widely adopted standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in the United States.
When the authority having jurisdiction (JHA) adopts NFPA 70, any exams that the authority sponsors to provide licensing is often based on the adopted edition of the electrical code. When new editions of the code are adopted the code article changes between editions can be the bases for electrical exam questions.
Are you aware of the Article 210 Branch Circuits code change between the 2020 and 2023 editions of NFPA 70?
Can you answer electrical exam questions related to this change?
In the 2023 edition of NFPA 70, Article 210 contains a revision of section 210.12(C) which clarifies the requirements for arc-fault circuit-interrupter (AFCI) protection for branch circuits that supply outlets or devices in dormitory units.
The revised article states that AFCI protection is required for all 120-volt, single-phase, 15-ampere and 20-ampere branch circuits that supply outlets or devices installed in dormitory unit bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, closets, bathrooms, or similar areas. This aligns with the requirements for dwelling units, and it is intended to reduce the risk of fire caused by arcing faults.
