You are a successful electrician. You’ve gained skills that only years of hands on field experience can give. There is just one thing that stands between you and greater opportunities for advancement and increased earning potential. In a word…it’s a electrical license with your name on it.
The only way to get that all important license is to pass your electrical exam. The challenges you’ll face when answering exam questions are very different from those you face in the field. For example, you pride yourself on going above and beyond the minimum code requirements for electrical installation. While that’s great for your customer and for your reputation as an electrician, you need to learn how to answer exam questions based on minimum code requirements, not on how you do the work in the field. What’s the best way to prepare to pass your exam?
Don’t expect to see exam questions that will evaluate you simply on how much knowledge you gained working in the field. Learn how to think the way the exam is written. The code requires a minimum standard of installation. In order to pass the exam that’s the standard you’ll need to use to answer questions.
Consider the following example?
What is the demand on the service for one 12 kW 240 volt/120 volt single-phase range?
A. 12 kW
B. 10 kW
C. 8 kW
D. None of the above
If you were installing this 12 kW range in the field perhaps you would calculate the service load based on the nameplate or connected load rating of 12 kW. While there is certainly nothing wrong with using that standard in the field, if you were to chose 12 kW as an exam answer the question would be marked incorrect. Why? Because the word demand is in the text of the question. The demand load for this range on the service represents a reduction from the connected or nameplate rating load. So even though the connected or nameplate rating load for this range is 12 kW, the demand load is 8 kW.
Knowing the difference between connected verses demand load and learning how to apply code properly is the only way to arrive at the correct answer. Careful exam preparation is the key to success. Call 888-919-3926 to start preparing to pass your exam today.
