You are committed to doing quality work and solving problems in the field carefully and thoughtfully. But you know that taking your electrical exam will be a very different experience from working in the field.
On average these exams are 100 questions and four hours in length, which means that you have approximately 2.4 minutes to answer each question.
Can you answer the following question in 2.4 minutes?
Question:
What is the full load current in the common conductor of a 5 hp. 230 volt, two-phase three wire motor?
Solution:
13.6 amps x 1.41 = 18.6 amps
Using the table of contents in NFPA 70 can prove helpful. Article 430 Motors is divided into sections. Section XIV is the table section. Table 430-149 provides full load current values for two-phase, 4 wire motors. Apply the multiplier rules above the table for determining the current in the common conductor if the motor has three wires instead of four.
Understanding when to use the table of contents verses the index was key to being able to answer this question in 2.4 minutes. Always use the method that will get you to the answer in the shortest possible time.
