There is no shortage of do it yourself electrical study guides available that promise to prepare you to pass the electrical exam. However there is a tremendous difference between electrical exam study guides and electrical exam study guidance.
Exam guidance helps you make the connection between the work you do every day in the field and the questions you’ll see on your examination. It also means that you will have access to knowledgeable instructors who will carefully and patiently guide you through the codes and calculations you’ll need to know to pass your exam. You can’t ask a study guide questions, but you can ask your instructor as many questions as needed to understand the material.
Can you answer the following exam question with ease?
Find the code required cable tray width for the following conductors:
Refer to NFPA 70 Article 392.22(B)(1)(c) which provides the rules that govern cable tray calculations when 1000 kcmil or larger single conductors cables are installed in the same cable tray with single conductor cables smaller than 1000 kcmil. This code article requires the use of Column 2 of Table 392.22(B)(1).
Determine the area square inch measurement for the conductors. Since the total square inches required for these conductors is 22.2628 sq.in. simply refer to Column 2 of Table 392.22(B)(1) and choose the measurement closest to this value without going under it. 26 sq.in. would be the best choice. Look to the left of the table to locate the corresponding cable tray width in inches. A 24 inch tray would be required.
To understand and correctly answer these kinds of questions on your electrical exam you’ll need more than electrical exam study guides or one day code cram courses.
